This superb small antique French gilt gesso wall mirror, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century (possibly Italian), radiates history, character, and craftsmanship. The beautifully detailed hand-carved gesso frame originally featured full gilding, later overpainted in a rich deep red pigment during the 19th century. Over decades of gentle wear and cleaning, the red paint has naturally softened, allowing the original gilt to re-emerge, creating a wonderfully layered surface of antique red and gold.
The mirror retains its extremely heavy original plate, showing light, age-appropriate foxing that enhances its authentic antique charm. Every mark and variation adds to the story and visual depth of this piece.
Perfectly proportioned, this antique gilt mirror works effortlessly as a decorative wall mirror, whether placed in a hallway, bedroom, bathroom, or sitting room. Wherever it hangs, it brings a sense of opulence, European heritage, and a beautifully chequered past to the space.
