This excellent antique adjustable reading and writing table dates to the turn of the 19th–20th century and comes from the renowned workshops of John Carter of London. Carter produced a small range of highly functional tables that have since become increasingly desirable, and this example perfectly demonstrates the maker’s practical yet elegant approach to design.
The table features a quarter-cut oak veneered top mounted on a robust cast-iron base with original fittings. The design allows the user to adjust both the height and the front-to-back angle of the top, making the table exceptionally versatile. Today, it suits a wide range of uses, including a reading or writing table, artwork or painting stand, sheet-music table, or stylish lamp table.
Well engineered and visually appealing, this Carter’s table combines industrial strength with refined craftsmanship, making it a practical and characterful addition to both period and modern interiors.
